    A Catholic Framework for Evangelization
      • Read the USCCB Document: Listen, Teach, Send
    • Mission

The Church's mission has always been to evangelize. She follows Christ's command to "make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to observe all that I have commanded" (Mt. 28:19-20).

In response to this divine command, the Diocese of Providence offers a framework for missionary discipleship, based on the Church teachings, especially the USCCB document Listen, Teach, Send. This plan is meant to be used across the diocese, parishes, and schools.

    • Vision

The Church uses the story of “The Appearance on the Road to Emmaus” from the Gospel of Luke (24:13-35) as a model for all evangelical activity.

On the road, Jesus Engages the disciples and listens to their struggles. He teaches and Equips them with the truth, beauty, and goodness of the Gospel and opens their eyes through the breaking of the bread. This encounter with the risen Christ Sends them forth on the mission to share what they have received. We are called to do the same.

    • E N G A G E

In this beginning pathway of evangelization, it’s crucial to listen actively and with empathy,  and to really hear people’s stories, questions, and struggles. Engage in meaningful dialogue, not just to speak, but to understand and connect on a deeper level. This phase also involves removing obstacles that may prevent others from encountering Christ, whether they be misconceptions, fears, doubt, or past hurts. Build genuine relationships and take the time to invest in people’s lives, showing care for the whole person. Above all, cultivate authentic friendships that are rooted in love, openness, and a willingness to walk alongside one another on the spiritual journey. This approach lays the foundation for deeper conversations and ultimately, transformation.

    • E Q U I P

In this pathway of the framework, address the questions people have with patience and clarity, to ensure they feel heard and understood. Be Christocentric in all that you do, keeping Jesus at the center of conversations, teaching, and actions. Use evangelizing catechesis to teach the truths of the faith in a way that is inviting and relevant to their lives. Help others develop a habit of prayer, encouraging them to make time for God daily. Live a sacramental life and actively participate in the Church’s Sacraments, showing others the transformative power of these encounters with God. Through this, we can lead others to experience the fullness of life in Christ that moves beyond just intellectual knowledge.

    • S E N D

In this final pathway, help others discern their unique charisms or spiritual gifts, helping them recognize how God is calling them to serve the Church. Witness boldly to the faith by living out your beliefs confidently and authentically, inspiring others to do the same. Help others discern their vocations by guiding people in discovering how the Lord is calling them to live out the universal call to holiness. Prepare disciples for mission by equipping them with the knowledge, tools, and courage they need to share the Gospel. Finally, communicate holy urgency—remind others that the call to evangelize is urgent. The time to act is now, for the salvation of souls is at stake.

    • The Lord says "GO FORWARD"

Will we take the next step?
      (Exodus 14:15)
