  • CATECHETICAL LEADERS
    CATECHETICAL LEADERS
“The single most critical factor in an effective parish catechetical program is the leadership of  a professionally trained parish catechetical leader.”
      • USCCB, National Directory for Catechesis
    • The Church's Vision

Catechetical leaders play a crucial role in guiding evangelization and catechetical efforts for adults, youth, and children in the parish. To do this effectively, they must be disciples of Jesus Christ, committed to ongoing growth in the Catholic faith and serving as witnesses to others. Their role includes recruiting, forming, and evaluating catechists, while ensuring the implementation of diocesan policies related to evangelization and catechesis. Catechetical leaders are called not just to transmit knowledge but to help others encounter Christ, strengthening their Catholic identity and growing in holiness. Like Mary of Bethany in Luke 10:38-42, they must first nurture their own spiritual lives, sitting at the feet of Jesus to hear His voice. This vocation requires daily commitment to prayer, study, and reflection in order to lead others toward a deeper life in Christ.

    • Our Vision

The Secretariat for Evangelization and Pastoral Planning works closely with catechetical leaders to assess their needs and offer support through ongoing dialogue. By fostering these relationships, the team ensures that parish catechetical leaders receive the guidance and resources necessary for professional success, as well as their spiritual growth. Participation in the diocesan Certificate in Catholic Theology program is a key element of this ongoing formation, helping leaders to deepen their understanding and enhance their ability to guide others in faith. Additionally, the Secretariat remains focused on the mission of evangelization, offering innovative models of catechesis that respond to the needs of the Church in the 21st century. We challenge parishes to move beyond outdated catechetical models, encouraging a bold exodus from comfortable approaches to embrace the freedom and vitality of new methods that foster authentic encounters with Jesus Christ.

    • Congregation for the Clergy, General Directory for Catechesis
      • The General Directory for Catechesis was published in 1997 by the Vatican. It offers an overview for the ministry of catechesis. There are a great many considerations from this document as a parish catechetical leader seeks to implement the eccesial vision for catechesis in the parish. This document can be found here.

One of the key ideas that this document expresses is the idea that the OCIA is a model for all evangelization and catechesis:
"Given that the missio ad gentes is the paradigm of all the Church's missionary activity, the baptismal catechumenate, which is joined to it, is the model of its catechizing activity" (GDC 90).
Not sure what the OCIA is, please reach out to us and we can discuss.
